Mwai Kumwnda’s Melbourne Vixens are the 2020 Suncorp Super Netball Champions

The Melbourne Vixens have taken out the 2020 Suncorp Super Netball title after defeating the West Coast Fever 66-64 in a thriller at Nissan Arena on Sunday.

Today’s win caps off a big season for the Vixens who walk away with both the minor premiership and Super Netball trophy in a year that saw them competing away from home in a Quensland based hub/

After both teams played out a thrilling draw back in Round 10, it was no surprise today’s grand final went down to the wire.

Melbourne might’ve won by two points but the result could’ve easily swung the other way when, with just over one minute remaining, Fever goal-attack Alice Teague-Neeld had the opportunity to put her side up by one with a super shot.

Teague-Neeld had slotted two super shots from four attempts prior to her effort in the final stages.

But her attempt, which looked good at first, would ultimately tip out as the Vixens secured the rebound and marched up the court with the ball to hang on for the win.

Goal-scorer Mwai Kumwenda was the star for the Vixens and earned Player of the Match honours. She finished the game with 47 goals from 50 shots.

It was also a fitting farewell for retiring stars Caitlin Thwaites and Tegan Philip who both bow out from Super Netball as champions.
