Shemu Joyah’s ‘Road to Sunrise’ is the first ever film from Malawi to be selected to enter the Oscars in the Best Foreign Language category for the 91st academy awards.
Apart from this, the movie won the Best Movie Southern Africa in the Africa Magic Viewers Choice awards in 2018.
Road to Sunrise went on to receive several nominations in the same year at African Movie Academy awards including achievement for the best soundtrack and best film.
Although the firm was not nominated for the Oscars but the entry alone is a positive step for our Movie Industry which is still developing.
In this particular year, only 8 countries in Africa submitted their movies and the last time a film representing an African country won this categoly was South Africa’s “Tsotsi” at the 78th Oscars in 2006.
